Education Campus Gasometerumfeld

The educational campus in the Gasometer area is being developed as an important component in the changing urban space of Vienna's Gasometer district. In an area characterized by former industrial facilities, new residential buildings, and spacious open areas, the campus forms an identity-defining place for education, encounters, and neighborhood life.

The design organizes the spatial program into several buildings grouped around communal open spaces. Between the buildings, differentiated outdoor spaces are created that can be used as break areas, play zones, and informal learning spaces. This spatial structure creates clear orientation within the campus while enabling diverse relationships between interior and exterior spaces.

Inside, the organization follows the principle of contemporary educational landscapes. Classrooms are arranged in clusters and grouped around open zones that serve as communal learning areas, lounges, and extensions of the classrooms. These open spatial sequences promote communication, cooperation, and different forms of learning.

Special attention is paid to the connection between the building and the open space. Generous glazing and direct access to the outdoor areas enable close integration between classrooms and the open spaces of the campus. Terraces, courtyards, and green lounge areas extend the learning space into the outdoor area and create a variety of opportunities for movement and interaction.

Through its clear urban positioning and the differentiated organization of learning spaces, the education campus develops a distinct identity within the Gasometer district. The campus thus becomes a new social focal point for the neighborhood and an open place of learning within the growing urban area.

The design was awarded second prize in an international competition in 2019.
