DN House in Kuala Lumpur
In one of the liveliest districts of Kuala Lumpur, a place to retreat took form for a young family, which was designed as the answer to the tropical climate and the urban overcrowding of the metropolis. Embedded in the multicultural surroundings with a variety of offerings, the house creates a calm and private atmosphere – as an alternative to the dynamics of the surroundings.
The two-storey shell combines natural materials, light guidance and precise detailing into one harmonious complete picture. Above the central stairway, a generous skylight provides a play of light that varies with the time of day. The wooden stairs create a warm, almost sculptural effect. As a result the stairwell is more than just a connection: it becomes the stage for light and movement in everyday life.
The interior design concept of Dwg Studios is based on a reduced material palette. Grey marbled stone surfaces, vertical wooden slats and purpose-made fixtures in warm natural colours create a calm, timeless atmosphere. Wood is found again in many details – from pieces of furniture to wall coverings – and lends the modern lines a soft feel. Generous glazing creates sightlines to the green areas outside. Transparency, natural ventilation and thoughtful use of materials such as stone, wood and textiles promote a pleasant ambience and a healthy living climate. As soon as you enter the house, the controlled handling of light and space is striking.
The lighting design from Studio Nimmersatt strengthens this effect: concealed LED rails, targeted spots and dimmable zone scenes create differing spatial pictures – from functional to atmospheric – depending on the time of day. The operating elements from JUNG also integrate themselves into the design concept. The LS 990 switch range in black is used, which integrates itself discreetly into the reduced interior rooms. In areas with higher demands on light control and scene design, KNX F-50 push-buttons are also installed.
