Fresh Kills landfill is one of the largest landfill complexes in the world, with 6 large landfills rising out of a former salt marsh. The design of the 2,300-acre park applies cutting edge restoration techniques to improve the quality of soils and water, and to establish diverse native plant communities using low cost, agricultural-scale approaches. Approximately 1.5 million cubic meters of soil will be manufactured on site using dredge spoils and other recycled materials; and some existing soils will be improved in situ. New habitats are designed, and adaptively managed, to support wildlife to the island. Wind and solar energy farming and methane gas harvest are integrated into the park design to produce power for the park and the New York grid. Recycled materials such as slag are incorporated into paving, architecture, and other facets of the park. Composting toilets and other green measures typically used only in wilderness parks are adapted for urban use at Fresh Kills Park.
