House Bruges

The protected building houses a pharmacy and home since the 17th century. The need for more space in the pharmacy demanded an extension of the dwelling. By connecting the attic with the adjacent apartment we created an open and light new home.

Daylight enters through new sawtooth roofs that connect both existing roofs. The former apartment contains the supporting functions. This allows for the attic to be opened and the roof trusses restored, thus becoming iconic elements in the space. Two contemporary zinc dormers give the transformed dwelling a new identity and diminish the seclusion of the attic, without compromising the historic character of the city.

By integrating the renovated building with the historic fabric, the residential function can be maintained. A typically leftover space in the city is used. The house is adjustabled in the future and is, after minor modifications, wheelchair accessible. The house, therefore, could accommodate both young and elderly residents.
