Class with a Terrace – Floridsdorf has gained a new architectural highlight: the Willi Resetarits Education Campus in Hinaysgasse, designed by Kronaus Mitterer Architekten. The building brings together a kindergarten, primary school, secondary school, music school and youth center under one roof, and stands out through its innovative architecture and sustainable construction.

The building is characterized by a checkerboard-like arrangement of so-called “learning blocks,” alternating with open spaces. This spatial configuration enables flexible use, allows abundant daylight to enter the interior, and creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor areas. The combination of timber and concrete creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while the façade, with its alternating projections and recesses, gives the building a distinctive identity.

The thoughtful design continues in the outdoor spaces. Generous open areas have been designed as experiential landscapes for the children and are complemented by planted terraces on the upper floors. This greenery not only improves the microclimate but also supports the City of Vienna’s Urban Heat Island strategy by helping to cool the surrounding environment.

The school also sets standards in terms of sustainability. A photovoltaic system provides renewable energy, while geothermal energy through activated building components contributes to cooling and tempering the interior spaces. Rainwater is used intelligently, and nesting boxes for swifts, bats and jackdaws have been integrated into the façade to support local wildlife.

The school in Hinaysgasse is more than just an educational building. It is a lively place for learning and a new focal point in Floridsdorf. With its open design and diverse uses, it demonstrates how contemporary architecture and sustainability can work hand in hand.
