Learning Neighborhood in the Park

With the “Learning Neighborhood in the Park,” a forward-looking school building is being created in Adlershof that combines urban integration, innovative learning concepts and sustainable construction. The project establishes a harmonious connection between the heterogeneous surroundings and the adjacent landscape park. The school becomes a place of encounter where architecture and nature engage in an ongoing dialogue.

The concept “School in the Park – Park in the School” forms the basis of the design. The organic building structure merges with the surrounding landscape, creating fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. From Hermann-Dorner-Allee towards the green open spaces, the learning and community areas are deliberately oriented towards nature, offering students light-filled and well-ventilated spaces that encourage identification and appropriation. At the same time, the urban scale mediates between the nearby single-family houses and the commercial area beyond the avenue.

The learning neighborhood is modularly divided into several “compartments,” functioning as small schools within the larger comprehensive school. This clear spatial structure provides orientation for students and supports individualized learning formats. Flexible learning landscapes, retreat areas and open forums create spaces for project work, creative teaching methods and social interaction. All spaces are designed with dual-aspect daylighting and cross-ventilation to ensure optimal usability. In addition, the educational spaces are closely connected with outdoor areas such as the school garden, sports park and various themed open spaces, integrating nature into everyday learning.

Particular emphasis is placed on the sustainable construction of the project. Designed as a timber-concrete hybrid structure, the school combines ecological responsibility with high functionality. Prefabricated timber elements ensure fast and resource-efficient construction. Extensive green roofs and a photovoltaic system on the sports halls reduce energy consumption and support the building’s climate-friendly concept.

The “Learning Neighborhood in the Park” represents an exemplary project for the knowledge society of tomorrow: a learning and living environment that places the needs of students at its center and stands out through architecture, landscape design and innovative concepts. A vision that was awarded second prize in the competition.
