Sustainable country living. A new urban quarter in the countryside south of Wolfsburg, just a few minutes’ drive from the city centre, was to provide residential accommodation suitable for a wide range of lifestyles. Also on the wish list: a combination of cost-efficient space utilisation and high-quality housing. A total of six buildings, some featuring ground-floor retail units and underground parking, were constructed on two sites. Rising four and five storeys, the apartment blocks are characterised by a soft, bright modernity, their rounded facade corners and minimalist colour palate radiating a gently flowing, restful aesthetic. A crucial aspect of this section of the development are the access routes and dynamically shaped landscaped areas that link the two sites, particularly via the “green finger” to the west, to create outdoor spaces that also convey a feeling of “home”. The vertical organisation and the way the individual building heights are tailored to the site’s changing levels ensure open sightlines from all units. This vertically staggered configuration also offers noise protection from the main road.
